The allergy and reactivity reduction programme for skin, respiratory, behaviour and gut symptoms and more, where we treat the cause as well as the symptoms

If you’ve been suffering from allergic or insensitivity issues for a while, you may be frustrated at getting nowhere with conventional testing and treatments. You want to discover and correct the root cause of your symptoms, rather than just suppress symptoms.
At Sheena Hendon Health, a qualified Dietitian (UK) and NZ registered Nutritionist and Naturopath will take the time to listen to you and your history, conducting a thorough case history, symptom analysis and possible referral for functional pathology testing, to discover what’s really behind your symptoms.

Once we have a clear understanding of what’s causing your symptoms, you will work together with your practitioner to create a personalised treatment plan consisting of herbal medicines, nutritional supplements, and an eating plan (if relevant).

You are given all the support you need, from recipes and eating plans, to troubleshooting, , ongoing consultations and email support. We are there for you until the causes of your symptoms are resolved and you are living life symptom-free.

What to expect from your sessions

  1. Initial session – 60 minutes

During your initial 60-minute consultation, you will sit down with your practitioner to discuss your health history and review all your symptoms and diet. This comprehensive appraisal ensures that I have all the information needed to fully understand all the factors affecting your health and to establish a baseline of your allergies and intolerances from which we can track improvement in your symptoms.

On completion of your assessment, your practitioner, depending on the symptoms,  may:

  • Recommend initial functional testing such as Blood tests, SIBO Breath Test and or a Comprehensive Stool Analysis.
  • Provide you with dietary guidelines, including an allowable food list, eating plan, and meal plan guidance
  • Recommend initial supplements and lifestyle changes for you to begin.

2. Report of findings. Once we have all the information we need, including the results of any external testing we develop a report of findings and plan. This plan is developed without you being there and will take more than one hour to produce. It may include;

A Diet and nutrition plan. Based on the person’s needs – general nutrition for health and wellness, weight management or sports performance
Lifestyle activities – such as a personalised exercise or activity regime, a stress management toolbox, mindfulness techniques, or life coaching sessions
Herbal or nutritional medicine recommendations. Herbal or nutritional medicine can be the most effective way to kick-start your body back into balance. We use only the highest-grade supplements and herbs available, all of which can be purchased from the clinic.

3. The second plan reviewing appointment. Once we have gathered together and assessed all the information, we will get you back in for a 1/2 an hour consult. We will then go through your individualised recommendations to help you achieve your outcomes and to explain to you the cause of the issues, why you need to make the changes and how making those changes will help you. We like to make sure our clients are well informed about their health treatments – what, when and why. You will leave a consultation with a plan and specific guidelines for the coming weeks, which may include dietary changes, nutrient supplementation, herbs and some insights into thought patterns, beliefs and behaviours that may be impacting your health.

4. OPTIONAL Follow up 2 x 30 min review sessions option. Approx 4 and 12 weeks after your plan review session. We know that the key to health and wellness success is ongoing support and motivation and that is why we thoroughly recommend you invest a little extra up front so that your next two review sessions are locked in. This means that once we begin our work together, we can easily address any issues that arise, make adjustments to the plan or answer any questions or concerns that arise. Please note these follow up sessions must be taken within 4 months of the initial session unless agreed otherwise

Allergies, intolerances sensitivities defined

Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to substances in the environment that are harmless for most people, such as house dust mites, pet dander, pollen, insect bites and stings, moulds and foods. An intolerance is considered a ‘chemical’ reaction to a substance, commonly food, and does not show up on a traditional allergy test. The term sensitivity is less clear; however, in complementary medicine, it is commonly seen as a delayed and milder reaction. The possible manifestations of a food reaction are widespread and also non-specific. They have been linked to gastrointestinal symptoms, skin complaints, respiratory issues, fatigue, headache, migraine, cognitive deficits, neurodevelopmental disorders, anxiety, depression, joint pain, muscle pain, and endocrine disturbances. Regardless of the cause, be it environmental or food-induced, the impact on an individual’s quality of life can be considerable.

An allergic reaction involves a complex interplay between antigens, immune cells (e.g. T cells, Immunoglobulin E (IgE), Immunoglobulin G (IgG), Immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies) and effector cell activation (mast cells, basophils, eosinophils). This results in an inflammatory response (a reaction), with localised and systemic symptoms. The consequential sustained inflammation may act as a potential driver exacerbating other chronic conditions.

Building Tolerance

Increasing tolerance to environmental and food-borne allergens is a key strategy when faced with the myriad of respiratory, skin and digestive allergic/reactive events that can impact individuals of all ages. Current medical approaches focus on the removal of the allergen and symptomatic relief. The goal of an Allergy and Reactivity Reduction Programme is to not just aid in symptom relief, but to focus on correcting the underlying processes – immune, gut, microbiome, digestion – and increasing allergen tolerance
